The Amethyst Review was born from a simple observation: in a world moving at breakneck speed, the most profound truths are often found in the quietest corners.
I am Lydia Laga, an indie author and military Public Affairs professional. For years, my work has required me to be a “professional bystander,” someone who watches, records, and interprets the world from the margins of history-in-the-making. Whether I am documenting field exercises or tracking the subtle shifts in a local culture, my perspective is rooted in the art of witnessing.
Our Philosophy
This site is a digital home for human-authored prose and poetry. In an era of algorithmic noise, we prioritize the “messy,” authentic flow of a real person’s voice. Here, you will find:
- Fiction & Poetry: Short stories that explore the complexities of the human condition, often through the lens of travel and displacement.
- The Traveler’s Record: Essays and reflections inspired by my time in the military and my travels across the globe.
- Curated Clarity: A commitment to minimalist, prestigious storytelling that respects the reader’s intelligence and time.
Why “Amethyst”?
Amethyst has long been my brand and pen name, chosen for its association with clarity and protection. Like the traveler on the suitcase in our logo, we carry our stories with us, seeking the “purple” moments of beauty amid the grey of daily life.
We invite you to pause, sit on your suitcase, and join our journey through the stories found in the margins.
